SIB Council on e-Agriculture & Environment (SIB EAE)

Keywords:

Green products, growth monitoring, techniques and practices, market/food chains, agricultural information, environmental sensors, pollution, clean environment

Scope:

To provide information on agriculture practices via electronic knowledge-based mechanisms and databases. To gather this information electronically and to analyze it for the benefit of providing chemically reduced, more nutritious, natural and abundant agricultural products. To monitor the changes in the environment and provide feedback on how we can minimise our effect on the environment through our day to day living.

Key-Challenges:

  • Ensure the systematic dissemination of information using ICT on agriculture;
  • Maximize yields and quality of harvest using ICT;
  • Protecting plants and animals from harmful environments with the assistance of ICT;
  • Maximize and help promote the use of quality natural products via ICT technologies which in turn provides better health and benefit to the environment and people;
  • Sustainable agriculture
  • Weather forecast and prediction models
  • Sensor information related to weather and climate changes;

Mission:

Advancing the knowledge, quality and application of agriculture and the environment in general using ICT.

Description:

e-agriculture is an emerging field focusing on the enhancement of agricultural and rural development through improved information and communication processes. More specifically, e-agriculture involves the conceptualization, design, development, evaluation and application of innovative ways to use information and communication technologies (ICT) in the rural domain, with a primary focus on agriculture

An increasing demand for natural resources leads to rising waste volumes, degraded environment, higher risk exposure to diverse pollutants, more frequent disasters and negative impacts on citizens' health. This increasingly contributes to costs to the economy and environment everywhere. The realization of the effective application of e-agriculture to the environment has become a major priority for the international community. This SIB provides a means to advance this investigation into e-agriculture and the environment providing benefits of using ICT to resolve some of the issues involved and understand the impact that ICT can have on sustainable development.
