Tutorials and Beginner's Guide

Tutorials and Beginner's Guides on the SIB portals are used to share knowledge between members of the ICST Society. Typically they help colleagues gain a basic knowledge about some technology (e.g. WiMAX, Cloud Computing), market (e.g. telephone operators, Internet-based media), or skill set (e.g. how to apply for a patent, how to present your idea to a VC).

You have a number of choices for how you submit tutorials and beginner's guides for publication on the portals:

  • Submit a Tutorial by logging in and using the Contribute function, selecting a Title, SIB, a short description of the tutorial and then attaching the tutorial. The attachment is in PDF format and can represent a slide presentation (e.g. from Power Point) or a document (e.g. from Word). Shortly, we will also be adding video and audio support (to use these now, see the ConfCast option below).
  • Use the ConfCast, ICST′s publication portal designed to facilitate remote participation at and access to the technical sessions, workshops, keynote presentations, etc. of ICST events.

In general, a good tutorial presents its subject as a series of step by step instructions on how to do something. Tutorials usually have the following characteristics:

  • A presentation of content, usually with examples, typically broken up into discrete modules or sections.
  • Some method of review that reinforces or tests the understanding of the content in the related module or section is desirable.
  • A transition to additional modules or sections that builds on the instructions already provided, done linearly or via branching.
